The Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday a single transport ticket which will allow travel all over the country in public means of transport.
The measure was put forward on Monday by Pedro Sánchez in his report for the year 2025, … although it was something that the Executive was already planning since Óscar Puente had already reported it at the beginning of the year.
This is a measure which aims to reproduce the monthly transport pass available in Germany since 2023 and which allows unlimited access to buses, metros, local and regional trains. In Spain, the measure has its own singularities. These are the aspects hint:
When will the single transport ticket come into force?
The Council of Ministers gave the green light to the single transport ticket on Tuesday and it is expected that it will come into force in the second half of January. He did it through royal decreewhich implies that Congress must validate it within 30 days.
Óscar Puente, in an interview with TVE, said that It will be January 19 when the subscription starts working.
Prices and transport included in the single pass
The single approved transport ticket It will cost 60 euros per month for adults and 30 for young people. under 26 years old.
Transports included are those which depend on the Central Executive. That’s to say, Cercanías, Media Distancia and public bus services.
The Executive already indicated on Monday that its intention was for the autonomous communities to “gradually” adhere to this measure. In this sense, the transport manager declared that The government’s intention is to add other transport such as the metro, tram and urban buses which depend on the autonomous communities and town halls. To this end, Puente said that the royal decree “will allow a formula to be established so that agreements can be signed with each of the administrations that wish to join.”
And what about the rest of the transport measures?
The announcement raised other questions such as, for example, whether other approved measures such as the subsidization of public transport subscriptions for communities or the Cercanías monthly subscription will remain in force.
Concerning the second, Puente clarified that The new state payment is “just one product among others” and assured that those who wish to continue purchasing the 2-day subscription0 euros per month for Cercanías trains They can continue to do so.
On the other hand, the royal decree It also includes the extension of subsidies for community transport subscriptions. and that they will maintain “a priori” the reductions approved on July 1. This measure was in effect until December 31 and, if validation continues, it will continue for longer. Currently, the State finances 20% of transport tickets and communities the remaining 20%, which makes it possible to reduce general fares by 40%. Thus, the Government’s single subscription will be able to coexist with the subsidized subscriptions of the autonomous communities, pending further details.
The reactions of certain communities to the announcement
After the government’s announcement, the Community of Madrid was one of the first to react. Sources at the Department of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure told the ABC they will have to study membership over fears of a price increase for some users.
Andalusia also reacted “cautiously”. Juanma Moreno argued that “key information” is missing, such as the necessary technological deployment, financing or specific conditions.
