The Son of a Thousand Men, an adaptation of Valter Hugo Mäe’s book recently released into the Netflix catalogue, introduces the audience to Isaura, one of the characters who supports part of the story’s central narrative. She is played by actress Rebecca Jamir, a newcomer to the world of cinema, who was stigmatized by her family because she lost her virginity before marriage and was forced to marry a random man.
In the film, Rebecca stars alongside big names like Rodrigo Santoro, Johnny Massaro and Grace Basso. In an interview with CapitalsThe actress says that exchanges with her cast mates were crucial in finding the tender tone for the character.
“Working with them is an honor for any actress and it enhances that mutuality in the work,” she says. “When you have partners with this level of excellence, everything is magnified.”

“Son of a Thousand Men,” “Tremembé” and other unmissable premieres this week
The actress recalls that she was anxiously awaiting casting confirmation, especially because of the relationship between Isora and her mother, played by Grace Basso. “I found out it was Grace and I was equally happy. They are giant actors and I admire them so much,” she says.
Her film debut marks an important point in the career of Rebecca, who began working in theater as a child in Recife. She says that audiovisual material seemed far away and that making the film was a dream come true.
She says: “Cinema is what really awakened me to the decision to become an actress. I also really love reading, I love the world of literature and novels, and I think it’s very important. So, to debut in cinema, with a rich and beautiful character, based on a film based on this book by Walter Hugo May, was very wonderful.”

In the film, Isora is a woman who is silenced in all aspects of her life. The actress says she needed to understand how to communicate with a character who speaks little but interacts a lot.
“These characters who are searching for existence, searching for welcome, as wonderful as it may sound, I think silence has to do with searching for our voice. We need silence. And there are so many voices to find our voice. So, I find working with this very poetic.”
Rebecca’s experience as a Pernambuco woman also influenced the process. She says her cultural training in Recife led her to fulfill her dream of appearing on the big screen one day. “I’m a big fan of the culture of Pernambuco, the cinema of Pernambuco and I think that shapes the imagination of my passion for my work, for cinema, theatre, music, visual arts, in everything, I think.”
The actress is currently experiencing an intense circulation moment between theatre, streaming and cinemas. She’s in As Vitrines, in the fifth season of Sintonia and has already started rehearsing the musical Domingo no Parque, inspired by the works of Gilberto Gil, scheduled for 2026.
“It’s fun to try all these languages, because I’ve reinvented myself a lot,” he says. “Working with so many different languages and personalities is things that feed into each other.”
