Mechanical breakdown
During questioning, the suspect said he was “completely sorry” and that he did not know Tainara Souza Santos.
Douglas said he had been at a bar since Friday evening (28/11) and got involved in a fight to defend his friend Kauan after a disagreement with Tainara’s partner.
In the confusion, Douglas was allegedly hit in the face with a bottle and threatened with death. He said he left the scene with his friend and that, already in the car, he saw Tainara accompanied by the other boy. The man then apparently made a maneuver and was leaving when “he ended up running over his car”.
Douglas said he suspected the alleged mechanical problem when he noticed “the car wasn’t moving forward” after the crash, but he denied noticing the victim was under the vehicle.
He said people started gesturing, but he accelerated and left the scene in the direction of Marginal Tietê. On the avenue, other drivers honked their horns and warned that a woman was underneath the vehicle. According to the man, he stopped at a gas station a few meters away – at which point Tainara freed himself from the car – but fled for fear of being attacked.
Douglas then told his family what happened and spoke to a lawyer, who advised him to leave the car away from the scene of the incident and turn it over to authorities later. The man took the vehicle to an ex-father-in-law without giving a reason.
So, Douglas booked a room in a remote hotel, where he was arrested the day after the crime. When he was arrested, the man attacked a police officer and was shot in the arm.
The police deny the version
- However, Douglas’ testimony clashes with information collected by the police.
- According to the investigation, the criminal knew Tainara, with whom had a casual relationship. He acted out of jealousy and did not accept the end of the relationship.
- Kauan tried to discourage Douglas and insisted that the man stop the car while the woman was dragged on the marginal.
- Police Chief Augusto Bícego also said Douglas did not stop the vehicle and Tainara only escaped because her body fell.
- Tainara’s sister said Douglas had been pursuing her for some time and they I have never had a serious relationship.
