Clube do Morumbi finished the Brasileirão in 8th place and hoped for the title of Cruzeiro or Fluminense
The Copa do Brasil decision between Corinthians and Vasco has not only frustrated Cruzeiro and Fluminense supporters. São Paulo fans also perceived the definition of finalists in the national competition as bad news.
By finishing in 8th place in the Brazilian Championship, Morumbi’s team backed either Cruzeiro (3rd place) or Fluminense (5th place) to open up an additional spot at the 2026 Libertadores.
The Brasileirão ranks the first four placed directly in the group stage, while the 5th and 6th go to the pre-liberators. However, as Flamengo were national and continental champions, G6 became G7 and could become G8 if the Copa do Brasil title, which also guarantees the champion a place in the Libertadores, went to a team already ranked via the Brazilian Championship.
With this, São Paulo will participate in the Copa Sudamericana next season. Hernán Crespo’s team won the tournament in 2015.
The Copa do Brasil finals will take place next Wednesday 17, at the NeoQuímica Arena, and next Sunday 21, at the Maracanã, in Rio de Janeiro.
