According to the specialist website FlightAware, thousands of flights were canceled or delayed this Friday (December 26, 2025) in the United States due to a violent winter storm that hit the northeast of the country and especially the main airports in the New York metropolitan area.
About half of the cancellations affected flights departing or arriving at LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy and Newark airports, while terminals in Detroit, Philadelphia and Boston also saw significant delays and cancellations throughout the day.
The National Weather Service extended a winter storm warning from New York to northeastern New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley and areas of Long Island and Connecticut, where some areas could see snow accumulations of more than 10 inches (25 centimeters) in the heaviest areas.
As the storm advances, the city of New York issued a travel advisory warning that low temperatures will make it difficult for snow to melt and increase the risk of slippery and dangerous conditions on highways and city streets.
Authorities urged residents to limit non-essential travel while adverse conditions persist.
As of 6:30 p.m., a total of 1,364 flights had been canceled and 4,267 had been delayed. GMT on Friday, according to the FlightAware website, which reported that New York and Chicago airports were among the hardest-hit airports.
