The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has launched an offensive to expand its presence among the low-income population with a view to the 2026 elections. This Saturday (13/12), the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, Guilherme Boulos (PSol-SP), kicks off one of the main bets of the Executive to get closer to this public: the program of the Government of Brazil in the street.
The initiative is part of the mission delegated to the new portfolio holder responsible for articulation with social movements. Upon taking office, the minister emphasized that one of the priorities of his administration would be to “put the government on the streets”, that is, to increase direct contacts with the population and ensure that federal actions are at the forefront.
The first edition of the program will take place in Sol Nascente, in the Federal District, one of the largest favelas in the country, and will offer free services in the areas of health, education, employment, income and others. This will also be an opportunity to present federal government programs to the target population of public policies.
One of the planned actions, for example, is to provide advice on how to join the Reforma Casa Brasil program, of the Ministry of Cities, which grants credits to families to carry out small works on their own property. Vaccination services, medical expertise linked to the National Social Security Institute (INSS) and support for entrepreneurs will also be offered.
The government on the streets
- For this year, the General Secretariat is planning two editions of the program: one in Sol Nascente, this Saturday (13/12), and another in the favela of Heliópolis (SP), next weekend.
- It is hoped that by June 2026, the initiative will reach 30 cities in the country, located in the 27 units of the federation. Events will always take place in popular regions.
- Services will take place throughout the day and will be free.
- Boulos took office at the SG at the end of October, after President Lula showed himself dissatisfied with the results presented by the minister Márcio Macêdo, then in office.
- One of the PSol politician’s missions is to expand the government’s dialogue with social movements and communities to prepare the PT’s electoral base.
Caravans
As part of the rapprochement efforts, the government has also resumed the rhythm of the Federative Caravans, a program managed by the Secretariat for Institutional Relations (SRI), headed by Minister Gleisi Hoffmann (PT-PR). The initiative aims to expand the federal government’s relations with municipalities.
Since September, four editions of the traveling event have taken place in the cities of Rio Grande do Norte, Maranhão, Paraná and Minas Gerais. The last one, in Belo Horizonte, took place in the presence of President Lula. At the time, he defended the presence of the federal government in the states.
“We have decided to ensure that the government addresses the people. If the citizen cannot go to the city to access a public service, the State has the obligation to go to them,” he declared.
