The victims were waiting for public transport in Guarulhos, when the tree gave way and fell on both of them; death was confirmed at the scene
The fall of a tree in the center of Guarulhosin the metropolitan area of São Paulo, on the afternoon of this Friday the 12th, caused the death of a woman and injured another. The incident occurred at number 176, Rua Arminda de Lima.
The information comes from firefighters, who responded to the incident. Four vehicles were mobilized and the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) also had to be called.
The women were waiting for public transport at the bus stop, when the tree gave way and fell on both of them. According to Civil Defense, one of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was transported alive to a local hospital. The identities of the two have not been revealed.
The road had to be temporarily closed to remove the tree and clean the area. Civil Protection claims to have carried out an on-site inspection to identify the risks of further falls. There is a school near the bus stop.
“The site was left secure, ensuring adequate conditions for pedestrian and vehicle traffic,” the agency said.
The metropolitan region of São Paulo was once again hit by strong storms this Friday the 12th. According to firefighters, the company received 186 calls for falling trees between midnight and 10 p.m.
During the week, a gust of wind with winds of 98 km/h, it caused damage in the capital and the municipalities of the Greater SP. More than 1,400 calls were made for falling trees and more than 2.2 million people were left without electricity, according to data from Enel, the concessionaire responsible for distribution in the region.
According to Civil Defense, the woman who died in Guarulhos is the third death recorded in the metropolitan area due to incidents related to it’s raining and strong winds – 26 other people were injured.
The other two deaths were recorded in the capital. Last Wednesday 10, a 54 year old woman died after being hit by a wall on Rua Cristóvão Jaqueseast of the capital. She was rescued by Samu and transported to Sapopemba general hospital, but did not survive.
The other case occurred on Thursday 11, in Higienópolis, in the central region of São Paulo. A 52-year-old man was voluntarily trying to help remove a branch from a tree on Rua Piauí, when he lost his balance on the stairs and fell, hitting his head on the floor.
According to Military Police, the company was called to the scene at 3:04 p.m., but upon arriving at the address found the man dead. The death was confirmed by a Samu doctor called to the scene.
