If today is Thursday, we’re talking about machismo. Violence against women. Sexual harassment. Abuse of power. Complicit silence. Necessary cooperators. From the Salazar affair. Do not mix with the Torremolinos case. Not even with that of the president of the Provincial Council of Lugo. Yes, they all respond to the same pattern, and they all have casualties along the way. But the response was not the same, all the protagonists coming from the same party, the PSOE. In the first case, there was inaction, silence and a more than justified suspicion regarding the apparent desire to shed light on the matter. The second was investigated, the victim was interviewed and assistance provided for in the party’s anti-harassment protocol was provided. Regarding the third, there is a complaint against the alleged harasser recorded this Monday and apparently coordinated with the broadcast of a television program that was going to be broadcast 24 hours later, which does not mean that the testimonies are not extremely serious. In fact, the organic leader of the PSOE in this province also resigned this Thursday at five o’clock in the afternoon from his position as president of the Provincial Council, although he will continue to lead the Council of Monforte de Lemos.
Being left-wing does not imply being feminist, although there are political formations on this spectrum, such as the PSOE, which have promoted equality policies and taken up some of the challenges of the feminist agenda. The path is demonstrated by walking, yes. And of course, take action. Silence and inaction only contribute to eroding credibility and trust in women, as the data shows.
