Tegucigalpa, December 14 (EFE). – The President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, congratulated this Sunday the far-right José Antonio Kast on his victory in the Chilean presidential elections against the leftist Jeannette Jara.
“I congratulate @JoseAntonioKast on his election as President of the Sister Republic of Chile. The democratic and peaceful processes strengthen the historic relations between our peoples and consolidate the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Congratulations to the Chilean people,” Castro said on the social network X.
Kast defeated Jara, former labor minister under current President Gabriel Boric, in the Chilean elections.
The Honduran president from the ruling Freedom and Refoundation Party (Libre, left) still does not know who her successor will be on January 27, 2026, as two weeks after her country’s November 30 general election, the review is still ongoing due to various problems.
According to the preliminary results of the elections in Honduras published so far by the National Electoral Council (CNE), the candidate of the conservative National Party, Nasry ‘Tito Asfura, is in first place with 1,305,033 votes (40.54%).
In second place is the candidate of the Liberal Party, Salvador Nasralla, also conservative, with 1,261,849 ballots (39.19%), according to 99.80% of the minutes counted so far.
The ruling Libre party’s candidate, Rixi Moncada, is in third place in the count with 621,188 votes (19.29%).
Technical problems and recriminations between Honduran electoral body board members continue to hamper a special audit that was scheduled to begin Saturday because at least 2,773 ballot papers show discrepancies.
As of November 30, the National Electoral Council (CNE) has 30 days to announce the official results of the Honduran elections. EFE
