Second Vice President and Minister of Labor Yolanda Díaz announced on Thursday that she would denounce the controversial mailbox of the employers’ association CEOE Canarias to report workers’ allegedly fraudulent sick leave. The labor manager will take the initiative with the Spanish Data Protection Agency. “It’s illegal,” he reiterated.
Díaz criticized the initiative of the Canary Islands employers’ association, which was joined by Antonio Garamendi, the head of state of the CEOE employers’ association. “He created an anonymous office allowing workers to report sick workers. I ask Mr. Garamendi to immediately remove this office. It is illegal,” he argued.
The Minister of Labor said she was going to report this mailbox. “I also tell you that we will submit this fact to all the necessary authorities, but to one in particular: the Spanish Data Protection Agency.”
Díaz said that this anonymous mailbox “is not protected by law”, that it “goes against human rights” and considered the initiative “very serious”. “It’s inhumane, that’s the first thing, but secondly it’s illegal,” he concluded.
He wants to close mourning permits on Monday
The Labor Minister also criticized employers for rejecting the extension of the death permit to ten days and the creation of a new permit for palliative care of family members. “We are faced with an absolutely inhumane employer,” Díaz said.
The vice president announced that next Monday she would hold the last social dialogue meeting on this subject, only with the unions, with the aim of reaching an agreement so that the government can approve the initiative.
As it is a law that modifies the Status of Workers, the standard must pass through Parliament and add the necessary support to move forward, an increasingly complex situation for the Executive given the loss of support from the Junts.
In the Labor Party, we hope that these “bereavement permits” will be supported by Congress, as was the extension of leave for the birth of a child a few months ago. However, in this case, the remuneration for the weeks of leave is covered by the State and for bereavement leave, they would be covered by companies, which makes it difficult to support the measure for certain training close to the business world.
