In a series of statements published on his account on the social network, as reported by the media that disseminated his statements, the Ukrainian president insisted that Russia’s latest accusation has the main aim of stopping international progress towards a peaceful solution to the conflict that began in 2022.
According to media reports, Zelensky rejected the Russian accusation of the alleged attack and described it as an invention intended to legitimize an additional military reaction by Moscow, including against the Ukrainian capital. He argued that “the story about an alleged attack on Putin’s residence is a fabrication intended to justify further attacks against Ukraine, including Kiev.” In addition, he emphasized that the complaint was part of Russia’s strategy to “justify its own refusal to take the necessary steps to end the war.”
The Ukrainian president also noted that the Russian authorities had bombed Kiev in the past, citing the attack on the Cabinet of Ministers building as an example. “Typical Russian lies. Furthermore, the Russians have already attacked Kiev in the past, including the Cabinet of Ministers building,” Zelensky said, according to the source.
The media explained that the original accusation came from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who claimed that more than 90 Ukrainian drones attempted to attack a Russian presidential residence in Novgorod. Lavrov said the incident occurred during “intense negotiations between Russia and the United States to resolve the Ukraine conflict” and warned that “such reckless actions will not go unanswered.” In addition, the head of Russian diplomacy stressed that although Moscow does not intend to withdraw from talks with Washington, the alleged attack causes Russia to reconsider its positions in the negotiations. Lavrov argued: “We have no intention of withdrawing from the negotiation process with the United States, but given the complete degeneration of the criminal regime in Kiev, which has turned to a policy of state terrorism, Russia’s negotiating positions are being reconsidered.”
As these media published, Zelensky defended that Ukraine does not make decisions that could undermine diplomacy, claiming that in his opinion Moscow acts in this way. For him, this difference characterizes both parties to the conflict. He also called on the international community not to remain silent in the face of alleged Russian maneuvers to obstruct peace, stressing the importance of preventing “Russia from undermining the work of building a lasting peace.”
The media added that a few hours before these crossings, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated his agreement with former US President Donald Trump that negotiations on a possible peace agreement were in the final stages. The comment was Moscow’s first official reaction after the meeting between Trump and Zelensky on Sunday in Florida to discuss finding a negotiated solution to the war.
The positions expressed show the context of tension between the parties involved, with opposing accusations and a dispute over the legitimacy of the military and diplomatic movements. The statements from both governments carried by the original media show that the reported incident and the official reactions are part of a particularly delicate moment marked by diplomatic efforts and threats to realign positions at the negotiating tables.
Both the Russian government’s version of a massive drone strike and the Ukrainian interpretation of a fabrication designed to block diplomacy reportedly reflect the climate of distrust and the difficulties in paving the way to a final resolution to the conflict that began in February 2022.
