Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meets Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron and Friedrich Merz in London, December 8, 2025 – PRESIDENCY OF UKRAINE
MADRID, 8 (EUROPA PRESSE)
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the leaders of the United Kingdom, Germany and France ended their meeting this Monday in London with “small steps towards peace” and the hope of returning to the United States, tomorrow evening at the earliest, a revised version of the peace plan defended by American President Donald Trump.
“I think the plan will be ready tomorrow, in the afternoon. I think we will consider it and send it to the United States,” Zelensky told media ahead of the closed-door meeting on a new 20-point document that will address two key issues to bring the parties closer: Ukraine’s territorial situation and international security guarantees for kyiv in the post-war period.
The official minutes of the meeting published by the office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer particularly emphasize the importance for Ukraine to obtain “strong security guarantees” in this regard, according to the joint opinion of Zelensky, Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with a view to a “just and lasting peace” in the country.
Another aspect discussed by the four leaders is the use of Russian resources for the reconstruction of Ukraine. In this sense, they stressed that the meeting gave rise to “positive progress” which, they hope, will continue during the new meetings in the coming days at the level of security advisers.
Broadly speaking, the leaders agree that the situation is at “a critical moment” and that “it is necessary to increase support for Ukraine and maintain pressure” on Russian President Vladimir Putin “to end this barbarity of war.”
COORDINATION WITH INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS
Zelensky and Starmer also took part in a joint call in London with Ukraine’s international allies; a “rich representation” according to the Ukrainian president which included Finland, Italy, Poland, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Turkey, the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte and the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen.
“We are coordinating to ensure that Europe’s voice is taken into account in all issues that concern it,” Zelensky explained in his X account about a call in which the allies were briefed “on contacts with the United States and work on all proposals currently on the table.”
“It is important that we collaborate on all documents, including the general peace framework, security guarantees and Ukraine’s post-war recovery,” the Ukrainian president said of a meeting in which strengthening the country’s air defense against Russian attacks and energy aid were also discussed as “key priorities.”
The Ukrainian president is already in Brussels, where he will meet Von der Leyen, Costa and Rutte. Also on his social networks, Zelensky insisted that at the moment, collaboration for Ukraine’s security is particularly “crucial”.
