Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky ended with some optimism his meeting this Sunday in Florida with Donald Trump, during which, in theory, the agreement for peace in Ukraine is ready, They said “95%”, although it remains to be seen whether he has Russia’s approval.which doesn’t seem close. However, Zelensky still remains cautious and made this known this Monday with several messages on social networks.
“There is no alternative to peace. With the Americans, we share a common position: The war must be ended through diplomacy and Russia must be forced to do so.; otherwise the war will continue. Without a doubt, if the war continues, the Americans, alongside the Europeans, will continue to support Ukraine, because we are defending ourselves in this war, we are fighting and we are not the aggressors,” he wrote, summarizing what was discussed with the United States.
Kyiv stresses that security guarantees which depend on the United States are agreed “one hundred percent” and nearby are, Zelensky said, those who will depend on the Europeans. Furthermore, this opened the door to subjecting the peace agreement to a citizens’ referendum so that Ukrainians could give their approval (or not).
But the Ukrainian president does not trust Putin. “The Russian attitude towards a referendum is not positive, because it requires a security infrastructure. This means that a ceasefire is necessary. But the Russians do not want to grant us a ceasefire for the days necessary for a referendum to be held.. Or 60 days. This is a very difficult question, and Russia wants to continue to pressure us with war: missiles, artillery, etc. This is why we are fighting for this,” summarized Zelensky, who wants this pact to be respected, which was not the case, he declared, with the Minsk agreements, signed in 2014.
Ukraine works on the principle that everything happens with the yes of the citizens, and Zelensky insisted on this idea. “As for the 20-point plan, We believe it should be approved by referendum. This would be the greatest historical confirmation of the strength of this document, and we would very much like to do it. Of course, not everyone sees it favorably, because it clearly involves the open expression of a will, and not of a single person or of 450 people. We are talking about millions of people,” he said.
However, the most important issue for the final agreement remains the status of Donbass, which has not yet been resolved. Ukraine wants to create a demilitarized economic zone there, controlled by kyiv and supervised by American and European allies. “Regarding the withdrawal from Donbass, it is no secret that Russia wants it. In their fantasies, they would like us not to exist on the territory of our own country. These fantasies have existed for years. But we have our own land, our own territorial integrity, our own state and our own interests. We will act in accordance with Ukraine’s interests,” Zelensky concluded on social media.
