Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Canada this Saturday (December 27, 2025) for a meeting with the Prime Minister before a crucial meeting with Donald Trump, hours after Russia attacked the Ukrainian capital Kiev, leaving more than a million households without electricity.
Kiev was the target of 519 drones and 40 missiles, of which 474 and 29 were shot down, respectively, according to Ukrainian aviation. One of the projectiles set a residential building on fire, causing one death and 28 injuries, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Another person died on the outskirts of the capital.
“The first attack left more than 700,000 customers without power on Saturday morning, with another 400,000 offline in the region around the capital,” private operator DTEK said on Telegram.
The attack came on the eve of a planned meeting between President Donald Trump and Zelensky in Florida where they will discuss the U.S.-sponsored plan to end the conflict that began nearly four years ago.
Before that meeting, Zelensky traveled to Halifax to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who, while receiving the Ukrainian president, condemned the “barbarism” of the new attacks in Kiev.
“We have the conditions … for a just and lasting peace, but that requires a willing Russia, and the barbarism we saw last night … shows how important it is that we stand with Ukraine,” Carney said.
Zelensky said this Saturday before leaving for the meeting that the recent Russian attack on Kiev shows that Moscow “does not want to end the war.”
