Did you overindulge at the end of the year and need to improve the health of your body to start the year off right? So-called detox teas made from herbs and natural ingredients have diuretic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
“After a few days of heavier foods, alcohol, and little routine, it’s common to seek a “detox.” But it is worth remembering: the real detox is the liver, through the continuous processes of our metabolism,” emphasizes Dr. Patricia Almeida, gastroenterologist and hepatologist of the Brazilian Society of Hepatology.
The expert says teas can alleviate symptoms, improve digestive comfort and help the body regain its balance. Among the safest and most useful options are:
1. Ginger tea
Ginger helps reduce nausea, improves digestion and relieves the heavy stomach feeling typical of overeating days.
Its natural compounds have an anti-inflammatory action and stimulate the functioning of the stomach, leaving everything lighter.
2. Mint tea
Mint relaxes the muscles of the digestive system and reduces gas and colic.
It is an excellent choice for cases of abdominal distension or discomfort right after meals.
3. Chamomile tea
Chamomile is an ally in recovery because it helps the body slow down.
It reduces tension, improves sleep and soothes mild inflammation – important after days of eating late, sleeping little or drinking too much.
“Ginger, mint and chamomile are safe choices, with great digestive and wellness benefits. They don’t ‘detox’ in the literal sense, but they help the body reorganize itself after overindulgence – and that’s exactly what the liver needs,” he says.
How to “Reset” the Body After the Holidays
Besides teas, small attitudes make a big difference. The doctor emphasizes:
• Generous hydration throughout the day;
• Take a break from alcohol for a few days;
• Lighter meals, rich in fiber, vegetables and fruits;
• Regular sleep, which promotes cell regeneration;
• Daily movement, even light, to improve metabolism.
