
Veracruz authorities on Thursday arrested Morenista Carlos Alberto Ventura, former mayor of the municipality of Atoyac, about 20 kilometers east of Córdoba, as possibly responsible for the murder of a person in mid-April, according to a statement from the state public prosecutor’s office. Ventura was arrested after completing his term, which spanned 2022-2025, and losing the jurisdiction that protected him as a city official.
The arrest took place around midnight, as he was leaving the Municipal Palace, at which point he lost his constitutional jurisdiction, according to reports. Reform. The Veracruz prosecutor’s office reported that the ex-leader is already in informal preventive detention, accused of the crime of intentional homicide which occurred on April 18. “At the first hearing, the court imposed informal preventive detention as a precautionary measure,” the agency points out in the letter. National media reported that the former official was in La Toma, a prison near Córdoba.
Ventura shared an image in which he appeared smiling in his office at Atoyac town hall. “Now yes, this is the last photo of the office of the Presidency. This place has witnessed great things, challenges and a lot of learning,” the former official explained in his writing. And he continued: “I thank God for giving me this opportunity, for accompanying us in the work of the 2022-2025 administration and for giving us the opportunity to live great experiences.” Ventura also assured that he was leaving his position “very happy” and that he would begin to resume “the projects on pause”.
The current former mayor also shared a publication last Wednesday in which he affirmed having fulfilled his commitment to the city of Veracruz: “For all of us who participated in this administration, it was an honor to be part of the public life of our municipality and to leave our legacy.
Reform indicated that the Ventura administration has been marked by a growing wave of violence in the territory and that during its mandate it has been accused of alleged links to criminal groups in the region. The politician came to power with the defunct Podemos party, and then joined the ranks of Morena.
