The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is a 2019 British film directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, an Englishman with a Nigerian father. The plot? Young William Kamkwamba goes to school in a village in Malawi and excels at repairing old radios and his knowledge of electricity. Due to poor harvests, his parents can no longer pay for his schooling and he is excluded, but manages to continue living “on the left.” He invents a windmill that could help with the unfortunate community’s plantations, but his father refuses to help him – he would have to give him his bicycle, the most valuable commodity. Until a series of misfortunes make him change his mind and the dream comes true.
In the documentary field, “The Dignity of Nobodies” (2005) by Fernando Solanas stands out. It works with the stories of different people and groups in the country after the 2001 crisis and shows the burden of solidarity as a way out. The film tells of community actions such as soup kitchens, rebuilt factories and work in hospitals.
