The capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the United States on Saturday creates an opportunity for a democratic transition in the country, a European Commission spokeswoman said on Monday.
“It is too early to review and assess the full legal implications,” the spokesperson said.
She did not comment on how the EU would characterize the US action, but said “it created an opportunity for a democratic transition, led by the Venezuelan people.”
“It should be remembered that Nicolas Maduro did not have the legitimacy of a democratically elected leader,” he added.
The spokeswoman declined to answer whether the EU believed US President Donald Trump was interested in a democratic transition in Venezuela.
