Shortly before 2 a.m., the sound of explosions woke Caracas residents as if the sky was rumbling. Planes constantly flying over the country, flashes of explosions and columns of smoke began to spread on social networks. Initial reports indicate several aerial bombardments on the Fuerte Tiuna military base, the main one in Caracas, located south of the Venezuelan capital, left completely without electricity. A huge fire was visible in the distance from the first minutes of the explosions, followed by an immense cloud of gray smoke.
Attacks were also confirmed on the La Carlota air base and other military installations in Caracas, such as the Cuartel de la Montaña, where Hugo Chávez’s remains lie, and in Maracay and La Guaira, as well as the Higuerote airport on the central coast. In videos from network users, helicopters were also seen flying over the city.
Two hours after the first attacks, no spokesperson for Nicolas Maduro’s government provided information on the situation, which arises after four months of tensions and escalation of the war between Washington and Caracas.
Last week, President Donald Trump said he carried out the first ground attack on a pier used by drug traffickers during December. There is still no clear information about the operation, although American media reported that the attack took place in Alta Guajira, on the border with Colombia. This information was also disclosed by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
