Some of the most popular browsers collect information about users, from browsing histories, searches, geographic locations to usage preferences. For example, Google Chrome stands out for recording detailed information on Internet users’ activity in exchange for the integration of services that allow personalization of advertisements and improvement of the experience, while Microsoft Edge gathers navigation, diagnostic and usage data to improve the service. But, Why do web browsers collect our data?
In any case, the collection of information may be used to for advertising purposes, behavioral analysis or service improvementwhich means Internet users need to know the permissions and privacy settings of each browser. For this reason, thanks to a study by the security company Surfshark, it was revealed how much data the most popular web browsers collect.
First of all, Google Chrome collects a total of 20 different types of datafrom financial information – payment details, bank accounts or card numbers -, contacts, locations, search history, identifiers, usage data and browsing information. Secondly, Bing Search collects twelve types of data and second, Opera is distinguished by the information it collects for third-party advertising or to track Internet users.
On the other hand, FireFox and DuckDuckGo collect the least sensitive data because they attempt to provide a secure browsing experience, while still Brave and Tor Browser are the browsers that barely collect data.
How to Surf the Internet Safely
To browse safely, users should select appropriate tools such as search engines and extensions that enhance user protection and privacy, preventing information from being used in unauthorized ways. Here is the advice provided by the National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE):
- Use security-focused browsers: As we mentioned, Brave is a browser that offers private browsing thanks to its multiple functions such as ad blocking, trackers, malicious code executions and cookies. Additionally, as a premium feature, it allows you to search privately and anonymously by offering a VPN service in its mobile app.
- Use search engines that promote greater privacy in searches: DuckDuckGo is a leading search engine that helps maintain online privacy. Although it stores search history, it does not store information such as location or IP address.
- Use a VPN connection: Instead of browsing the web directly, using a virtual private network between two devices prevents sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands.
- Install extensions to increase privacy: Users can use ad blockers, VPNs, passcode blockers, and password managers to control personal information.
