Tragedy with actress Yara Amaral turns 36; find out how it all happened
An unforgettable tragedy marked the television series and many Brazilians were victims death of actress Yara Amaral and 54 other people.
Exactly 36 years ago, at the turn of the year 1988-1989, the Bateau Mouche IV sank in Guanabara Bay, in the early morning after the New Year’s party.
The ship was carrying 150 passengers and was heading towards Copacabana Beach. At 11:50 p.m., it flows between the island of Cotunduba and Morro da Urca. The reason: an excess of passengers. The 52-year-old actress was one of the guests.
Yara Amaral has been marked by several soap operas on Globo, such as “Dancin’ Days”, “O Amor é Nosso”, “Sol de Verão”, “Guerra dos Sexos”, “Um Sonho a Mais”, “Cambalacho”, “Anos Dourados” and “Fera Radical”, her last soap opera. In the tragedy, his mother, Elisa do Amaral, also died.
The actors Sérgio Mamberti and Yolanda Cardoso were almost on board the boat. The artist declined the invitation because he had another commitment, while Yolanda didn’t go because Yara was late to pick her up.

At the time, reporter Renato Machado and cameraman Lúcio Rodrigues were covering the tragedy. “When we crossed to Copacabana, the trawler we were on was playing a lot. Everyone was seasick, including us,” Machado explained in a statement to the Memória Globo project, emphasizing that they decided to return to the dock.
