León, January 2 (EFE). – Spanish chess runner-up Jaime Santos Latasa sees “growth” in “blitz” mode – blitz games – compared to fast games.
Although Santos was one of the best national players and a former European champion in 2022, he was an irregular player, both at the European Championships and at the recent World Cup in Doha (Qatar).
“Perhaps the performance and results were balanced between the fast and lightning games,” the Leonese player told EFE, who showed in the Qatari World Double that both teams, which occupied a discreet position (144) in the first modality, were able to place themselves in a much better position in “Blitz”, the thirty-ninth in the standings, level with the twentieth.
“On the last day of the tournament, I played at a high level and won five victories in a row – including the victory against India’s Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, the seventh chess player in the world,” he emphasized.
However, in the World Cup event in quick play mode, Marcelino Sión’s student had to pay dearly for his championship final after a promising start that led him to the back of the Spanish team led by the Spanish-Venezuelan Eduardo Iturrizaga.
After the World Cup with which he said goodbye to 2025, Santos Latasa will start the new year by playing with Bayern Munich in a new round of the German league on January 10th and 11th. EFE
