The Governor Kathy Hochul announced special elections new York for him February 3rd with the aim of filling three vacancies in the state legislature, including the seat that belonged to Zohran Mamdani. The call was formalized by a official proclamation signed on January 2nd.
The call includes three legislative districts. In QueensHe State Assembly District 36 must choose replacement after departure Zohran Mamdaniwho took office as Mayor of New York City on January 1, 2026. This district includes Astoria And Long Island City.

The announcement was formalized by a proclamation signed in Albany ordering the holding of elections to fill unexpired terms.
The text explicitly quotes the Section 42 of the New York State Public Officers Lawwhich allows the governor to set the election date in the event of a vacancy in parliament.
In the official statement, Hochul said, “These legislators have represented their communities in Albany with distinction. There will be a special election to ensure their districts are represented. I look forward to working with their successors and advancing the issues that matter to New Yorkers.”
The special elections are taking place a single day on February 3rdwithout primary instances, and serve this purpose cover current mandates.
