A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.5 shook it southern and central Mexico this Friday, interrupting the first press conference of the year by the country’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, after seismic alarms went off. Despite this, so far no serious damage or injuries have been reported, according to authorities.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake was located on the southern coast of the Mexican Pacific, near San Marcos, in the state of Guerrero, about 70 kilometers east of Acapulco, one of the country’s main tourist sites.
Ten minutes after the earthquake alert went off, Sheinbaum resumed the press conference. “It seems there is no serious damage, but we will wait for Guerrero’s report,” she said.
Sheinbaum said he contacted state authorities, where all protocols had already been activated. The local government is still assessing the impact of the quake.
There was no impact on Mexico City, the country’s capital, according to the president.
