Launched in 2011, MTV Music ended its broadcasts this Wednesday (31) on channels dedicated to the broadcast of music videos with uninterrupted daily programming. The changes do not affect MTV’s main channel, which remains in operation.
MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live were no longer broadcast in countries including Brazil, United States, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary and Australia.
According to Deadline, the station said goodbye with the song “Video Killed the Radio Star” (1979), by the band The Buggles. The song, which talks about the replacement of the radio era by the video and image era, is the same one that inaugurated MTV broadcasts in the United States in 1981.
“The video killed the radio star. In my head and in my car, there’s no turning back, we’ve gone too far. The images came and broke the heart, it’s the VCR’s fault,” the lyrics say.
According to Rolling Stone magazine, neither the broadcaster nor its parent company, Paramount Skydance, have revealed the reasons for the closure of channels focused on music programming.
The changes come amid cost and personnel cuts at the parent company, nearly three months after the $8.4 billion (R$46.3 billion) merger between Paramount and Skydance was finalized.
MTV has also canceled long-running shows. In February, the closure of award shows such as the MTV Europe Music Awards and MTV Latin America’s MIAW Awards (formerly known as the Millennial Awards) was announced. In September, “Catfish: The TV Show,” after nine seasons on the air, ended.
