The support team working to clean Avenida Paulista during the 2026 New Year’s party, organized by the city of São Paulo, reported problems related to the accumulation of waste during the event. Lack of trash cans and low payment are among the complaints.
In the VIP area, intended for guests, city hall employees and the press, there are no additional trash cans and the public had to use those already installed on Avenida Paulista, which quickly filled up. The municipal administration provides free water and beer to the area.
“You have to walk around with a trash bag in your hand, it’s horrible,” said one employee, who preferred to remain anonymous.

Another employee, hired by an outsourced company, praised the organization of the event, but complained about the low pay he received for nine hours of work throughout this Wednesday (12/31).
“It’s excellent, the structure is organized, just the payment for cleaning, it’s not much,” he says. He claimed to have earned R$130 for working between 2:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Avenida Paulista.
The accumulation of waste, according to the man, extends beyond the VIP area and has also been identified among the general public. “It happens on any tour, people are like that,” he said.
An urban cleaning employee at São Paulo City Hall, on the contrary, denied any problem with cleaning the road.
“It’s nice to work, I go until morning,” said the man who was working while carrying a trash can among the audience. According to him, the lack of additional bins does not hinder the work.
Waste collected by workers is dumped in a dumpster on Rua Bela Cintra, on the corner of Avenida Paulista.
In a speech delivered on stage at the event, São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) thanked the cleaning team for their work on Avenida Paulista.

The town hall prohibits glass, but distributes longnecks
São Paulo City Hall distributed plastic cups of water and cans of beer until 11 p.m. this Wednesday, in sector VI.
After stocks of alcoholic beverages ran out, the administration began distributing long-necked beers in glass bottles.
However, among the objects prohibited during the event by the town hall are glass objects.
THE Metropolises questioned the São Paulo City Hall and is waiting for a position.
