Director Neyde Veneziano is preparing, alongside actor and director of Teatro Itália, Marcos Veríssimo, a special program to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Dario Fo (1926-2016), winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Literature.
The initiative will take place the week of the Italian playwright’s birthday, March 24 next year, at the Teatro Itália, and will feature various activities, such as plays, lectures and workshops.
Neyde is a researcher on the work of Dario Fo and lived with him and his life and work partner, the actress Franca Rame (1929-2013), in Milan.
The playwright was known for his political satire and criticism of the clergy. His work was both celebrated and harshly criticized in Italy. One of his texts, telling stories from the Bible from the perspective of the oppressed, was condemned by the Vatican as blasphemy.
“Accidental Death of an Anarchist,” a play for which he won an international audience, is based on the true story of a railway employee who fell from the fourth floor of a police station while being interrogated. Suicide, according to the authorities – and murder, according to the playwright’s interpretation.
