The elected mayor of New York, United States, Zohran Mamdani, took office in the early hours of this Thursday (1/1).
At 34, the Democrat became leader of the largest city in the United States after winning the electoral race in November, in a campaign governed by strong opposition to President Donald Trump.

After exchanging barbs, Trump will welcome Mamdani to the White House
The ceremony took place in a disused subway station near New York City Hall, in an event closed to family members and the press, according to local media.
Before being elected, Zohran Mamdani was a state deputy. Apparently a socialist, he was born in Kampala, Uganda, to an Indian mother and a Ugandan father. He grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, and moved to New York when he was 7 years old. He grew up in Queens and speaks six languages fluently.
In the primaries, he defeated former state Governor Andrew Cuomo and became a political gamble for the Democratic Party, which is struggling to find political leaders who can counter Trumpism in the face of Kamala Harris’ defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
During the election campaign, Mamdani was labeled an Islamic extremist by Donald Trump and threatened to cut off federal funds if elected. The Democrat also did not spare his criticism of the American president, who built an empire in the real estate sector in New York, and even called him a fascist.
However, days after the election, political opponents gathered at the White House. In an atmosphere of conciliation, Trump even softened the criticism received by Mamdani. When asked by the press if he maintained Trump’s fascist position, the president replied “it doesn’t matter. He can just say that.”
