Opposition mayors from the northern interior zone are combining their interests to discuss with the Buenos Aires executive a coordinated work plan to improve security performance.
As far as he could tell THE NATIONis the need to work in coordination with the province, a point that concerns the municipal leaders of Together for Change in the region, including those of Arrecifes, Capitán Sarmiento, Pergamino, Rojas, San Antonio de Areco, San Nicolás and Zárate, which correspond to the third electoral phase.
The mayor of the latter district, Marcelo Matzkin, met last week with Buenos Aires Security Minister Javier Alonso for a “working meeting where various issues related to prevention and citizen security were addressed, with a focus on the community.”
Those close to the coalition of opposition leaders claimed that this meeting was part of this initiative to “negotiate” together with the province various issues related to prevention, taking into account the specifics of the region, where the urban centers are surrounded by large fields and crossed by national highways, occasionally used as a logistic route by organized crime.
The meeting between Matzkin and Alonso is related to this, these sources said. “During the meeting, the mayor emphasized the need for coordinated cooperation between the different sectors of government: municipal, provincial and national, to address the problem of insecurity. The municipality also expressed its commitment to continue working on prevention and strengthening the work of the Buenos Aires Provincial Police. In this sense, they highlighted the more than one billion pesos that the municipality has already invested in the police,” they noted.
Among the technological tools for prevention used by the municipality, the introduction of a municipal alarm system stood out, which allows users to connect to the Zárate surveillance center and, in addition, to sound a siren in order to provide an immediate deterrent in the event of a crime or to receive urgent help in an emergency. The system is free for residents who pay security fees.
This community alarm was defined as “an organized network of neighbors connected to the monitoring center to request rapid assistance, participate in preventive measures or request medical assistance, with geolocation and, most importantly, with real-time reporting to the operations center connection desk” of Zárate.
