São Paulo residents prefer short, sonorous, easy-to-pronounce names for children born in the state. This is shown by the ranking of the most registered names in São Paulo civil registry offices in 2025.
Helena is, for the third year in a row, the most chosen first name for children in São Paulo, with 7,587 registrations last year. Next come Ravi, with 5,782 registrations, and Maitê, with 5,692.
The choices, which combine classic and modern options, follow the most used names throughout Brazil, also throughout 2025 (see ranking below).
“The choice of name is one of a child’s first acts of identity and reflects not only individual preferences, but also the cultural, social and even media movements that influence families over time,” says Leonardo Munari de Lima, president of the Association of Registrars of Natural Persons of São Paulo (Arpen-SP).

At the national level, the association brings together the country’s civil status offices and gathers information on births, marriages and deaths registered throughout the national territory.
The entity also manages the Civil Status Transparency Portal, where data on names chosen for children throughout Brazil is compiled.
“Civil registry offices play a fundamental role in preserving this collective memory, by officially recording the choices that mark the history of each citizen since birth,” says Munari.
