Few things are as popular as a good dessert. And if we talk about the most famous on the continent, Finland plays in another championship. Its culinary history, closely linked to the climate and local products, explains why Finnish desserts are committed to honest flavors and recipes without excess. Between small fruits, simple pastes and sweet aromas, these five classics are the gateway to a universe where sweetness accompanies, but does not overwhelm.
In this tour of Finnish pastries appear names that every traveler has heard – or tried –: pulla, mustikkapiirakka or korvapuusti, sweets that have crossed borders without losing their everyday character. Finland may be divided into regions or landscapes, but there is one thing that holds it together: its calm way of approaching sweet pleasure.
1. Korvapuusti
Finnish cinnamon brioche. Similar to cinnamon roll, but less cloying and with a strong cardamom aroma. It is common in cafes and homes and is an essential part of the coffee break.
2. Pulla
A traditional sweet bread made with cardamom. It can be presented alone or in different shapes and toppings. More than a specific dessert, it is a breakfast and snack essential.
3. Mustikkapiirakka
Blueberry pie, closely linked to summer and berry picking. It is prepared with a simple base and creamy filling, and is usually served with vanilla sauce.
4. Runebergintorttu
A small almond and rum cake, traditional for the month of February. It can be recognized by its cylindrical shape and the ring of icing filled with jam on top.
5. Leipäjuusto with jam
Known as “cheese bread”, it is served hot and accompanied by red fruit jam. Although it is not a classic dessert in the strict sense, it has a common place at the end of a meal.
