
The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) published, this Wednesday (12/31), in an additional edition of the Official Journal of the Union (DOU), the decree that sets the main results objective for 2026.
According to the publication, the government’s target will be a surplus of 0.25% of gross domestic product (GDP), or around 34 billion reais.
Additionally, it has been defined that the target will have a tolerance band of 0.25% upwards or downwards, that is, the lower ceiling will be zero deficit or balance between expenditure and income.

For 2025, the objective was a zero deficit, but with the same margin of tolerance. In practice, if the government obtains a negative result of up to 31 billion reais, it can consider that the objective has been achieved.

- Gross domestic product (GDP): the GDP growth projection presented by the government is 2.44%.
- Selic: The government’s estimate for 2026 is Selic at 13.11% at the end of the year.
- Minimum wage: the text presented by the government provides for a minimum wage of R$1,621. The value represents an increase of 7.44% compared to the 2025 minimum wage, of R$1,518.
- Inflation: In 2026, the government expects inflation to be 3.60% per year, i.e. within the target tolerance band.
