Madrid welcomes the new year with multiple renovations to its cityscape, some already underway and many more that will start in 2026. The main strategic axes are “the culmination of the great process of urban transformation that the city has experienced since Madrid Río”, according to … assured the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, during the annual report.
The most notable works which will be completed next year are the burying of the A-5, and the creation of Castellana Park And Sales park. On this subject, the mayor emphasized that “no investment has been made in infrastructure as extraordinary and important as that which was undertaken in this legislature and which will be completed before the end of 2026”.
Furthermore, as part of the renovation of spaces in the capital, the renovation of 36 places will be launched, like that of Jacinto Benavente. THE new neighborhoods in the southeast They will also see the light of day this year, such as Los Berrocales, whose first delivery of housing will take place in April, Valdecarros or Madrid Nuevo Norte.
Burial of the A-5
This is one of the most important and talked about works in the capital in 2025, although it started in 2024 and will end in 2026. The opening of the new tunnel is scheduled for November 2026 as Madrid City Hall announced last November a a month in advance in the schedule due to the good pace of work. The objective is to create a green space, with parks, trees and areas for children, as put forward by the delegate of the Urban Planning, Environment and Mobility zone, Borja Carabante, before starting the work.
Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, former mayor, was the first to present this idea, taken up by the current councilor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, after years of complaints from neighbors affected by highway noise. If all goes as planned, this road will become an urban corridor next year.
Castellana and Ventas Parks
Another of the main works is the Parque Castellana project. With an investment of approximately 98.4 million euros, 675 meters will be buried between Sinesio Delgado Street and Nudo Norte. The 70,000 square meters of surface area will be used to build a new green space called Parc Castellana.
Work in the area is expected to be completed within spring 2027with a tunnel which will concentrate the low traffic and leave the surface for public transport and local traffic. Its design is designed to minimize the impact on the trees and be able to preserve as many specimens as possible, although, according to the town hall, 787 new ones will be planted. Additionally, the three underground lanes per level will connect the northern junction with M-30, M-607, A-1 and M-11.
Recreation of the future green space at the foot of the five towers
On the other hand, Parque Ventas consists of the creation of a green platform of 16,370 square meters and almost two hundred meters in length that will cover the M-30 at the height of Quinta de Fuente del Berro, connecting the neighborhoods of Salamanca to Ciudad Lineal. With an investment of 70.4 million euros, pedestrian zones and gardens will be created, in addition to the planting of 591 new trees and 48,800 shrubs.
In its more than 2,150 square meters of meadows, children’s games, calisthenics equipment, an outdoor performance area, kiosks, fountains, benches and trash cans will be installed. Parque Ventas will also join two neighborhoods separated by 16 lanes through which, before the start of the work, 1.4 million vehicles circulated every day.
Expansion of the Movistar Arena
The Movistar Arena expansion project has already been approved and work is expected to begin in 2026, although no specific date has been specified. Thanks to the Self-Protection Plan of the Firefighters of the City Hall and the Community of Madrid, the reception capacity will increase from 17,453 to 20,008 seats for concerts and 15,000 seats for basketball matches, with the aim of organizing the Eurobasket in 2029. This space will accommodate 2.1 million spectators, in the more than 500 events that take place there each year. With this new project, it will become the place with the largest reception capacity in Spain.
Reforms in the squares
The capital will be, as Madrid City Hall wishes, a city of neighborhoods. In all, 36 seats will be renovatedlike that of Jacinto Benavente, with an investment of 9.5 million. With it, they intend to give priority to pedestrians and restrict the passage of unauthorized cars, so that in the spring of 2027, Madrid residents and residents can navigate it more easily and with the joy of someone walking between gardens and in the shade of trees.
New developments
In addition, the new neighborhoods in the southeast will see the light of day next year, with Madrid Nuevo Norte, Los Berrocales and Valdecarros in their sights. In the latter, the urbanization of the first three of the eight stages of the project should be completed in 2026. Already in 2027, 13,500 housing units will begin to be built, first steps towards reaching the 51,000 planned in the district.
In Los Berrocales, deliveries of the first promotions will take place at the beginning of the year, if everything goes as planned. There will be around 1,200 apartments which will total, with subsequent deliveries, more than 22,285. In Madrid Nuevo Norte, the first urbanization works in Las Tablas Oeste will begin at second quarter 2026so that the first housing units will be delivered in 2029.
Changes in the suburbs
One of the most anticipated openings this year was that of metro line 6, which reopened its doors to users on December 20 with its renovated infrastructure. After two hundred days of work and with the alternative of the Special Bus Service, the line in both directions is operational again. The reopening of the section between Moncloa and Legazpi, interrupted since September 6, has been brought forward by eleven days.
The work made it possible to renew the track platform, replacing the ballast with a concrete platform. The second phase will begin on January 7, with night work which They will install automatic doorsthe service will therefore close earlier at 11:00 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday. During this time slot, the service will be replaced by free EMT buses, between 11:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. and 1h30
In addition, during the summer of 2025, work began on the extension of metro line 5, which will connect Alameda de Osuna to Barajas Airport. With an investment reaching 181 million euros, it will be completed in 2027. The idea is, as the Minister of Housing, Transport and Community Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, warned in May, that “in half an hour you can go from the airstrip to traveling the Gran Vía”.
Construction work on line 11 of the Madrid Río metro
Another extension in progress is that of line 11, which will no longer be the shortest of all, expanding its stations to twenty between Plaza Elíptica and Conde de Casal. The most likely is that the works, divided into three phases and benefiting from funding of 671 million euros from the Community of Madrid, will not be completed until 2027.
Work is also underway on line 10, more precisely at the Santiago Bernabéu station, whose traffic restrictions on Paseo de la Castellana will end at the beginning of 2026, although they will not end until the first half of 2027. The work, which began in February 2024, aims to triple the surface area of the station due to the large influx of users during football matches. Additionally, the opening will be accompanied by a new name: Bernabéu.
Transformation in Atocha
On the other hand, since November, Adif AV has been faced with the last phase of the renovation work on the glass roof of the Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes station. With an investment of 67 million, they intend to recover the value of the historic building and optimize the user experience by improving access from the Carlos V roundabout. This action is part of the overall process of transformation of the Atocha railway complex.
