Agents of the Local Citizen Security Brigade of Telde (Gran Canaria) managed to intercept this Sunday a “kamikaze” vehicle driven by a septuagenarian in a state of disorientation while he was driving the wrong way on the GC-1 highway, one of the busiest roads in … the island and with speeds of up to 120 kilometers/hour in some sections.
The driver ended up going the wrong way after accidentally entering through a branch.
The National Police clarified that the events took place around 11:50 p.m., when several calls to 091 alerted of a white car traveling in the opposite direction on GC-1 in the southbound lanes and which was near the Alcampo shopping center.
Immediately, a police patrol went to the scene using acoustic and light devices, managing to locate the car in question, which was traveling up to four kilometers in the opposite direction, since it was intercepted at the Las Terrazas shopping center and forced to stop on the shoulder of the highway.
Likewise, officers secured the area and ordered the driver to turn off the engine and remove the ignition key, after which they verified that the driver was disoriented and inconsistent in his explanations.
Faced with this situation, the Civil Guard of Traffic was notified, which took charge of the corresponding procedures, as well as the health services which, after an initial assessment, transferred the driver to the Island Hospital for a more exhaustive medical assessment.
Ultimately, the vehicle was taken off the road and taken to the municipal depot, where traffic then returned to normal without causing any bodily harm or property damage.
