Nicolás Sguiglia, spokesman for the community group Con Málaga, which brings together Podemos and Izquierda Unida, criticized the speed with which the Málaga city council condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and called for the same attitude towards recent events in Venezuela. According to Europa Press, Sguiglia insisted that the council must issue a “clear and unequivocal” condemnation of what he described as the “imperialist aggression of Donald Trump’s administration” against the South American country.
According to Europa Press, Sguiglia considered the situation in Venezuela “extremely serious” and stressed that no foreign government has the legitimacy to unilaterally intervene in the affairs of another country or arrest its head of state. The spokesman said: “Regardless of everyone’s opinion of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, it is absolutely unacceptable that a foreign government would usurp the power to unilaterally attack a sovereign country and arbitrarily arrest its president.” This statement, published by Europa Press, aims to highlight what Sguiglia considers to be a serious violation of international law.
Con Málaga’s representative argued, as published by Europa Press, that these actions not only constituted a violation of the fundamental treaties and agreements of international law, but also represented a direct threat to the sovereignty of the people. Sguiglia also pointed out that the US government itself has openly acknowledged that one of its main objectives is the control of Venezuela’s oil resources, a fact that, in his opinion, confirms the “illegal, illegitimate and imperialist character of this aggression,” Europa Press claims.
In this context, Con Málaga’s main demand, Europa Press continues, is that the City Council of Málaga takes the side of international law, expressly and firmly condemns the actions of the United States in Venezuela and supports the peaceful resolution of the conflict within the framework of the principles of international legality and respect for national sovereignty. Sguiglia stressed: “We call on the City Council to condemn this aggression and stand on the side of international law and demand that any solution for Venezuela be reached exclusively within the framework of respect for international legality and the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people.”
In his statements collected by Europa Press, Sguiglia called for consistency from the mayor and recalled the city council’s immediate response to the situation in Ukraine. As he emphasized, the municipal institution should show the same speed and force in the Venezuelan case: “This illegal and illegitimate action by the administration of Donald Trump must now be condemned with the same speed and force.”
As Europa Press reported, the community spokesman warned of the danger that such normalization interventions would bring. “If we legitimize what Trump did in Venezuela, we legitimize that any power can invade the country it wants or arrest the president it wants. That is simply intolerable and poses a threat to everyone in the world,” Sguiglia said.
As part of the citizens’ response, as detailed by Europa Press, the leader of Con Málaga called for the active participation of Málaga society, citing the local spirit of solidarity. He called for public support for the Venezuelan cause and called for a rally in the Plaza de la Constitución, scheduled for next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., under the slogan of condemning foreign interventions and defending the principles of sovereignty and international legality. In his words, Europa Press reported: “We call on everyone to take the Plaza de la Constitución next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to condemn this imperialist aggression and defend the sovereignty of the people.”
According to Europa Press, the position presented by Sguiglia reflects concern about the precedent that unilateral intervention measures could set and underlines the call for respect for the autonomy of states and international agreements in conflict resolution.
