MADRID, January 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Friday that he had proposed that the country’s first deputy prime minister, Mikhailo Fedorov, take over as head of the Defense Ministry, replacing Denis Shmigal, whom he will keep on his team, as he promised.
Zelensky assessed that Fedorov – who must receive approval from the Ukrainian Parliament – “is deeply involved in drone issues and is working very effectively on the digitalization of public services and processes”, saying that Ukraine’s armed forces, arms manufacturers and partners must “implement beneficial changes in the defense sector”.
“Everything depends on the resilience of Ukrainians. And our resilience must be given the necessary weapons, energy, financing, political and institutional support. Shmigal is still part of our team – the Ukrainian team – and I thank him for his systematic work in favor of our state,” he said.
In this sense, he highlighted that during the year 2025 (period in which Shmigal led Defense after five years at the head of government), said ministerial portfolio “obtained solid results”, since, notably, in December it completed the task of producing interceptor drones with a production of more than a thousand units per day.
“We are working to increase the number of trained teams. There were many other similar tasks. Fedorov will be able to implement them and increase technological efficiency,” he assured, before emphasizing that he proposed that Shmigal “lead another direction in government work, equally important” for the resilience of the Ukrainian people.
