Nacho Fernández will be presented today at 10 a.m. at the headquarters
The day that many have been waiting for has come. Nacho Fernández, the reinforcement on which Gimnasia has placed all its cards, will be officially presented at the headquarters from 10 a.m., marking his return to the club where he was born after a decade.
The former River footballer, a known Lobo fan, kept his word and became the Fernando Zaniratto-led team’s first reinforcement for the 2026 season on Friday afternoon.
Nacho, who will again wear the healthy men’s jersey with the 8 on the back (the one worn by Bautista Merlini, whose continuity is not yet clear), the preferred number and the one he knew how to wear in his previous time in the institution. managed to reach an agreement with the leadership under Carlos Anacleto after a few days of negotiations. Despite the arrival of Argentinos Juniors in midfield who also wanted his services, the Castelli-born midfielder kept his word to return to Gimnasia and he did.
The return of Nacho Fernández was one of the main objectives of the transfer market of the new management and he was able to complete it before the end of the year, so he will become the first reinforcement and will start the preseason on January 2nd, the day on which the team will meet again at the Estancia Chica ground. The former River midfielder will sign a one-year contract with the option of a further year extension.
In the last few hours, Fernández took to his social network Instagram and wrote about “mixed emotions”, of gratitude and the certainty that it is “time to return home”. And he also dedicated a message to River.
“Today it is time to say goodbye to the club that has given me more joy than I could have imagined… There are mixed feelings of sadness that we were not able to say goodbye to River as a mark of history, achieving the goals we had set for ourselves, but with the certainty that we tried to the end.”
“And luck, because together with all my colleagues we have left an indelible mark that will remain in history!!”
“I would like to thank all the management and coaching staff for trusting me and also thank the people for the love I received in my two phases at the club… Without a doubt they have stolen a big part of the heart of me and my family.”
The closure marked the turning point. “I have to go home,” he said, referring to his return to Gimnasia. A return full of symbolism that unites past, identity and present. The river is left with affection; the wolf, ahead, with expectation.”
HIS DEBUT IN GYMNASTICS
Nacho Fernández made his debut in the Gimnasia jersey on October 2, 2010, when he came off the bench with number 33 in the Tripero team’s defeat against Argentinos Juniors. For the following tournament he had the number 32 available but did not add any minutes and was later loaned to Temperley, where he mainly used the mythical ten.
After returning to the club where he was born, the team took part in the B Nacional, so at that point the numbers were ordered from 1 to 11 in each game. However, when it was his turn as a starter in his first phase, Fernández knew how to wear the 11 jersey and in the last semester before his promotion he started wearing the 8 jersey, which he would later use until he was transferred to River, where he stayed for ten years.
