MADRID, December 22 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Israeli army confirmed this Monday the death of a suspected member of the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah in a drone attack carried out on Sunday in southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire agreed in November 2024.
“Israeli forces eliminated a Hezbollah terrorist who was working to restore the group’s military infrastructure in southern Lebanon,” the army said in a statement specifying that the attack took place on Sunday.
In this sense, he stressed that “two terrorists were then attacked in the Yatar region, in southern Lebanon.” “As part of these attacks, Israeli forces eliminated a terrorist. (…) Their actions constitute a violation of the agreements between Israel and Lebanon,” he concluded.
Last week, the Israeli armed forces claimed to have “eliminated” four suspected Hezbollah members. “We will continue to work to eliminate any threat to the State of Israel,” they said.
Israeli authorities justify this type of attacks against Lebanon by claiming that they act against the activities of Hezbollah and that, therefore, they do not violate the ceasefire agreed in November, although Beirut and the Shiite group have criticized these actions, also condemned by the United Nations for their negative impact on the stability of the country.
The agreement, reached after months of fighting following the attacks of October 7, 2023, provided that Israel and Hezbollah were to withdraw their troops from southern Lebanon. However, the Israeli army maintained five posts on the territory of its neighboring country, which was also criticized by the Lebanese authorities and the Shiite group, who demand an end to this deployment.
