Resignation, manager and extraordinary congress. The PSOE candidate in the Extremadura elections and leader of the Extremadura Socialists will present his resignation to the regional leadership this afternoon, as elDiario.es learned from sources within the regional executive.
The polls had already warned the PSOE of Extremadura that the candidate it presented in the 21D elections was not the best option to take the government from the junta to María Guardiola, but even the result was worse than expected, since the socialists reached a historic low, having lost more than 100,000 votes and 10 seats and maintained themselves with 25% of the vote. Until now, the PSOE had never fallen below 39% of the votes and in only one election, those of 2011, had it not been the leading political force.
“The PSOE result is very bad, without palliatives,” Gallardo himself said when evaluating the results, even before the full examination was completed on Sunday evening. The PSOE was the second force, far from the 29 deputies added by the PP, winner of the evening in number of votes. And although, after the recount, Gallardo did not confirm whether he would resign or not, he urgently summoned the regional executive of the party for this afternoon at 5 p.m.
It is there that he will announce his resignation, the appointment of a manager and the probable date of an extraordinary congress which has been agreed with the federal leadership and the Organization Secretary, Rebeca Torró.
“What worries me the least is my political future, what worries me most is that the PSOE makes the best decision, that’s why I called the executive and we can analyze. Above Miguel Ángel Gallardo is the PSOE of Extremadura, from tomorrow we will talk”, he declared on Sunday, leaving open the door to his departure from a leadership questioned from the start, despite the fact that the leader of the Socialists of Extremadura won two primary elections against other candidates promoted from Madrid.
