The director of the Copan building, Affonso Celso Prazeres de Oliveira, died this Sunday morning (21) in the capital of São Paulo, at the age of 86. The cause of death has not been released.
“Seu” Affonso, as he was known, had been hospitalized since December 15 for pneumonia and respiratory failure.
Manager of the Oscar Niemeyer-designed building for more than 30 years, Affonso has lived in Copan since 1963. He never left his post.
“Seu” Affonso enjoyed the prestige of few politicians: he was credited with the feat of removing Copan from the criminal record. In 2023, in his office with a photo of São Paulo in the background, he was moved when he told GLOBO of his fascination with the building.
“Rio has Christ the Redeemer, São Paulo has Copan,” he said at the time, originally from Rio.
The wake took place at the Funeral Home, 276, Rua São Carlos do Pinhal, in Bela Vista, downtown São Paulo, this Sunday, from 7 p.m. to midnight. The cremation took place from 1 a.m. at Cremação Vila Alpina.
