Somali authorities said on Monday that an operation by armed forces in the Middle Shabelle region, north of the capital Mogadishu, had killed several senior officials of the al-Qaeda-linked terror group Al Shabaab.
The operation launched in Yabad Godane resulted in the deaths of 15 suspects, including Yaafar Aden, a commander in charge of the area, a member of his medical team and head of a cell of the group operating in the area north of the capital.
The Somali army emphasized that the operation had brought about “significant deteriorations,” particularly “in terms of leadership, coordination and logistical support,” according to the Somali state news agency SONNA.
The group has stepped up its attacks in recent months, reaching areas north of Mogadishu, even as authorities have stepped up operations with the support of local clans and militias, all as part of the plan of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who pledged to put the fight against terrorism at the heart of his policies when he took office in May 2022.
