The crash of a Mexican navy plane on Monday in the Texan city of Galveston, United States, left at least five dead and two survivors. One of the passengers has not been located. The Secretary of the Navy said in a statement that the aircraft was “performing a medical support mission in coordination with the Michou and Mau Foundation,” known for its work with pediatric burn patients.
The incident occurred in thick fog over the waters of Galveston Bay as the plane approached Scholes International Airport on the outskirts of the city. Among the passengers was a child suffering from burns, the type of patients treated by the foundation. He was accompanied by three other civilians and four navy crew members. SEMAR did not specify who was saved by the American Coast Guard, in charge of the rescue.
The SEMAR King Air ANX 1209 twin-propeller aircraft had left Mérida International Airport. He got lost around three in the afternoon while preparing to land in Galveston, according to plane tracking platforms.
Emergency teams consisting of divers were deployed to the accident area, according to the Galveston Sheriff’s Office. In a video shared on social media, we see a police boat heading out to sea in thick fog.
Uncertainty is the state of the passengers. Among them, that of the burned child supported by the Michou and Mau foundation. The organization specializes in the free transportation of pediatric patients up to 18 years old with severe burns. On their website, they emphasize that the victims will be treated at Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston, where the crashed plane was headed.
