The third anniversary of the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers, January 8, 2023, will be marked by acts of the left across the country. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) plans a symbolic ceremony in the presence of the authorities. Allies also advocate that he veto the dosimetry bill at the ceremony.
At the same time, the Workers’ Party calls on activists to participate in street demonstrations on the same day to defend democracy. THE Metropolises found that party president Edinho Silva gathered state leaders earlier this month and asked them to mobilize their bases.
PL dosimetry
- The dosimetry bill provides for reduced sentences for those convicted of involvement in coups, including former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
- According to the text approved by Congress, in the event of conviction for more than one of the crimes against democratic institutions listed in the Penal Code, the most severe penalty must remain and the periods of imprisonment can no longer be cumulative.
- The sentence can be reduced by two-thirds if the crimes are committed in mobs – provided the person convicted did not play a leadership or financing role.
- People convicted of crimes against the democratic rule of law, even in the event of a repeat offense, will be entitled to progression in the regime if they have served at least 1/6 of their sentence.
This will be the third consecutive year that the Palácio do Planalto has organized January 8 commemorative events. In 2024, the ceremony was attended by the heads of the Three Powers in large numbers. The following year, the podium was empty due to the absence of the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, Arthur Lira (PP-AL) and Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), at the time.
From now on, the PT deputy wishes to once again bring together the leaders of the legislative and judicial powers on the same stage. The will was expressed during a ministerial meeting last week.
“We are going to have the symbolic act of January 8. So, the ministers who want to take a vacation, take a vacation and be here on the 8th. We must get in touch with the National Congress, with the Supreme Court, so that we can invite everyone. They want January 8 to be forgotten,” declared the president.
Veto on dosimetry
Allies of the head of the executive maintain that he signed the veto on the PL Dosimetry during the act. Lula has until the 13th to sanction or veto, but he has already declared that he will reject the text approved by Congress.
PT House Leader Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ) supported the veto in a video posted on social media.

Lula denies any agreement and says he will veto dosimetry
“If President Lula vetoes in the middle of this date, January 8, the day he tried to carry out a coup against democracy in Brazil, then it is up to us to take to the streets,” the MP said, calling for activism.
On Thursday (12/18), in an interview with journalists, Lula said he would reject the bill as soon as it reached his desk. According to the leader of the government in the Senate, Jacques Wagner, the president must formalize the decision by January 8.
“President Lula is going to do something so that we do not lose the memory of that sad day when they opposed democracy. And I don’t know what day he will sign the veto, but he will sign the veto by January 8,” the senator said.
