The BBC apologized to Donald Trump for an episode of the program panorama Who edited excerpts from a speech by the President of the United States, but rejected his claim for compensation.
The company also stated that it will not offer the program in question again.
The apology comes after The Daily Telegraph published a second, similarly edited extract shown in the programme. News nightAnd also from the BBC, In 2022.
A spokesperson for the company said: “BBC lawyers have written to President Trump’s legal team in response to a letter received on Sunday.”
BBC Chairman Samir Shah separately sent a personal letter to the White House explaining that he and the BBC regretted editing the President’s speech on January 6, 2021, which was broadcast on the program.
The BBC confirmed that it does not plan to rebroadcast the documentary on any of its platforms.
“While the BBC deeply regrets the way the video was edited, we strongly disagree that there are grounds for a defamation claim,” the company said.
“We will march to the Capitol and applaud our brave lawmakers,” Trump said in his January 6, 2021, speech.
More than 50 minutes later, he said in the same speech: “And we will fight. We will fight with all our might.”
In the program panorama From 2024, the excerpt shows him saying: “We’re going to march to the Capitol… and I’ll be there with you. And we’re going to fight. We’re going to fight with all our might.”
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said his speech was “twisted” and that the way it was presented “misled” the audience.
The BBC received the letter from Trump’s lawyers on Sunday.
The document demanded a “full and fair retraction” of the program, an apology, and for the BBC to “adequately compensate President Trump for the harm he has caused.”
There was a deadline of 22:00 GMT (19:00 Brasilia time) on Friday (14/11) for the BBC to respond.
