The hospitalization of former President Jair Bolsonaro, authorized by the Federal Supreme Court, will be marked by reinforced security, access restrictions and direct control of the Federal Police (PF) from his release from prison until his release from hospital. Minister Alexandre de Moraes’ decision details what each stage of Bolsonaro’s visit to DF Star Hospital, in Brasilia, will look like, where he will undergo examinations and surgery to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia.
Bolsonaro was taken to hospital on Wednesday morning. The trip must be carried out in complete discretion, with disembarkation directly in the unit’s garages, without any exposure to the public. The entire route will be under the responsibility of the Federal Police, who will also ensure security during hospitalization.
The court order determines uninterrupted supervision. At least two federal police officers must remain permanently positioned at the door of the hospital room, with 24-hour surveillance. Furthermore, the PF will maintain teams on standby inside and outside the hospital, with autonomy to reinforce the staff whenever it deems necessary.
Access to the room will be strictly controlled. Moraes banned the entry of cell phones, computers or any other electronic devices, except only medical equipment essential for treatment. Monitoring compliance with the rule will be the exclusive responsibility of the Federal Police, who will intervene within the hospital unit for the entire duration of hospitalization.
On a personal level, the decision authorizes the presence of former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro as an accompanist throughout the hospitalization, in compliance with hospital rules. Any other visits, including those of close family members, will depend on specific judicial authorization, which in practice restricts the former president’s circle of contacts during his hospitalization.
The defense had requested the recurring entry of two of his sons, Flávio and Carlos Bolsonaro, which Moraes refused.
From a medical point of view, this Wednesday will be devoted to clinical, laboratory and imaging examinations, in addition to preoperative preparation. The operation is scheduled for Thursday morning, Christmas Day, for an estimated duration of three to four hours, according to surgeon Cláudio Birolini. The medical team is committed to publishing daily bulletins with updates on procedures and clinical developments.
In addition to correcting the bilateral inguinal hernia, doctors are considering performing an anesthetic phrenic nerve block, a procedure that could help control persistent hiccups reported by Bolsonaro in recent months. The timing of this intervention will be further defined, depending on the clinical evaluation after the main surgery.
In the decision, Moraes emphasized that the authorization of hospitalization does not change anything in the execution of the sentence of 27 years and three months in prison imposed on the former president for attempted coup d’état. The minister stressed that Bolsonaro maintains “complete conditions of health treatment” even in detention and that the chosen hospital is located near the Superintendence of the Federal Police, which, according to him, preserves security and the execution of the sentence.
The medical team expects Bolsonaro to remain hospitalized between five and seven days after the operation, a period necessary for pain control, physiotherapy, prevention of thrombotic events and post-operative follow-up. Discharge will depend on clinical evolution.
