Summary
Minister Alexandre de Moraes allowed Jair Bolsonaro’s children to visit the former president during his surgical hospitalization, reinforcing strict security regulations.
Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), authorized the visit of the children of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) during the period in which he is hospitalized at the DF Star Hospital, in Brasilia, provided that the rules established by the hospital unit and the restrictions imposed by the Court are respected.
In a decision this Wednesday 24, the minister authorized the visit of the former Rio de Janeiro councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (PL), senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), the councilor of Balneário Camboriú (SC) Jair Renan Bolsonaro (PL) and the youngest daughter of the former president, Laura Bolsonaro.
“I reiterate that all the measures determined in the decision of 12/23/25 must be respected, including the prohibition of entering the hospital room with computers, cell phones or any other electronic device and that all other visits must be previously authorized by the Supreme Federal Court,” Moraes determined.
Surgery was authorized with strict safety measures
By authorizing Bolsonaro’s hospitalization and surgery over Christmas, Moraes also determined a series of security conditions to be met by the federal police.
The procedures were authorized in a decision published on Tuesday 23, following a request from the defense of the former president – who is serving a sentence after being convicted of attempted coup d’état.
Strict security measures include:
- Discreet transport of the person held in custody by the Federal Police, with disembarkation in the hospital garages;
- Prior contact of the Federal Police with the director of the DF Star Hospital to define the terms of hospitalization;
- Full surveillance throughout hospitalization, with 24-hour security and at least two federal police officers at the room door;
- Ban on electronic devices in the room, except medical equipment, guaranteeing confidentiality and protection.
Moraes had also authorized the presence of Bolsonaro’s wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, as an escort throughout his hospitalization.
PF expertise confirmed the need for surgical intervention
Bolsonaro’s surgery to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia was recommended by the former president’s medical team and confirmed by a federal police expert.
On Friday the 19th, the PF sent Moraes a medical report indicating the need for the intervention. Bolsonaro also suffers from persistent hiccups and insomnia, experts say. They also pointed out that when it comes to hiccups, another procedure, phrenic nerve block, is considered “technically relevant.”
“Regarding the advisability of the intervention, this Medical Commission understands that it must be carried out as quickly as possible, taking into account the refractory nature to established treatments, the deterioration of sleep and nutrition, in addition to accelerating the risk of complications of the hernia condition, due to the increase in intra-abdominal pressure,” the report concludes.
The medical examination took place on Wednesday 17, at the headquarters of the National Institute of Criminalistics, in Brasilia. The examination was decided by Moraes as part of monitoring the state of health of the former president, following the defense’s request to carry out a medical evaluation. Bolsonaro’s defense requested that he be transferred to home care due to his health condition.
