After a legal back-and-forth, the Tarcísio de Freitas government (Republican) finally intends to launch the civic-military schools program in the state of São Paulo in February 2026.
There will initially be around 100 schools in the state, which have gone through a consultation process with parents and teachers to adopt the model. The idea is that this number will be increased gradually.
“Quantitatively, it is not something that has a lot of impact on the entire school universe, but it is a model that generates a real positive impact for places that have security problems. It is the guarantee that the child will study,” says the Secretary of State for Education, Renato Feder.
He implemented the model as head of the Paraná area, the state where the system is most advanced.
The schools have the educational part under the responsibility of professionals in the field and the disciplinary part is the responsibility of retired police officers. The modality is a flag of right-wing groups.
In São Paulo, the system was approved by the Legislative Assembly, but action by the STF delayed its implementation. The release by the judiciary took place in September.
