A thief was beaten by his own victims after an attempted theft from a wine cellar in the early minutes of Christmas morning, in Itatiba, inland São Paulo. The reaction came from the owners of the establishment, who are uncle and nephew.
Both ran after, overpowered and beat the suspect, after he and two other accomplices announced the robbery using what was supposed to be a toy gun, which was seized by the two criminals who managed to escape.
Understand the case
- The affair occurred in the first minutes of this Thursday (25/12), in Adega Gole Certo.
- According to the civil police, three hooded men entered the premises.
- One of them pointed what appeared to be a gun and ordered the money in the cash register to be handed over to him.
- When they approached, businessman Rafael Silveira, 37, who was at the cash register, reacted.
“I got up and went towards them to defend my property,” he told police. The suspects ran, but one of them was eventually caught and attacked by the victims.
“They didn’t take anything”
Rafael also said that after restraining him, he deduced that the gun used when announcing the robbery was a toy. “They didn’t take anything from the cellar. They fled and took the simulacrum with them,” he explained. The merchant also indicated that he had owned the establishment for approximately two and a half years and lived on the upper floor of the property.
Rafael’s employee and nephew, 26-year-old João Pedro Moraes, confirmed the version. “One of them approached my uncle and pointed his gun. When my uncle came forward, they fled. We followed him and managed to catch one of them,” he said.
The arrested man was identified as 19-year-old Carlos Daniel Silva dos Santos. He had visible facial injuries resulting from the attacks and had to be taken to Santa Casa de Itatiba, where he remained hospitalized under police escort, with no release expected at the time the incident was recorded. Due to hospitalization he was not questioned.
The civil police ordered the arrest of Carlos Daniel for attempted robbery with a simulated firearm. The police report indicates that, in a preliminary analysis, the attacks suffered by the suspect occurred in the context of self-defense, although any excess must be investigated by the police.
