The surgical operation undergone by former President Jair Bolsonaro ended this Thursday afternoon, Christmas Day, at the DF Star Hospital, in Brasilia. The operation began around 9:15 a.m. and ended shortly before 1:00 p.m., lasting approximately three and a half hours, without complications. The information was confirmed to GLOBO by the medical team.
The completion of the former president’s surgery was announced by former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro herself, in a message posted on social media this Thursday morning.
Bolsonaro was hospitalized Wednesday to undergo tests and preoperative preparation before surgery to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia. The hospitalization was authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Court (STF), after the expertise of the federal police highlighted the need for medical intervention. He is expected to remain in the medical unit for five to seven days.
The surgical procedure is considered elective, but it has been indicated to avoid worsening of the condition and possible complications. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and aims to reposition the abdominal contents and strengthen the muscles in the groin area, where the abdominal wall is weakened.
What is a bilateral inguinal hernia
An inguinal hernia occurs when part of the intestine protrudes through weak points in the abdominal wall in the groin. In the bilateral case, the problem manifests itself on both sides. Surgery aims to correct the protrusion and reduce the risk of pain, hernia incarceration and other clinical complications.
Evaluation of phrenic nerve block
In addition to correcting the hernia, the medical team is evaluating an anesthetic phrenic nerve block, a procedure that could be indicated to treat persistent hiccups experienced by Bolsonaro in recent months. The phrenic nerve is responsible for stimulating the diaphragm, a muscle essential for breathing. The most appropriate time for this intervention had not yet been defined until Thursday morning.
What will be the postoperative period?
After the operation, Bolsonaro is expected to remain hospitalized for five to seven days, as planned by the medical team. The postoperative period includes strict pain control, physiotherapy for early mobilization, and care to prevent complications, such as deep vein thrombosis and respiratory problems.
Bolsonaro is accompanied by former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro. His sons, Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) and Carlos Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), were in the hospital shortly before the operation began.
The former president is serving a prison sentence of 27 years and three months after being convicted by the STF of attempted coup d’état. According to Alexandre de Moraes, the authorization for hospitalization does not hinder the execution of the sentence.
