Russian strategic bombers conducted a “planned” flight over the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea in the Arctic, which resulted in “fighter aircraft from abroad” escorting them, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on Thursday (December 25, 2025), citing Russian authorities.
The date of these flights of the Tu-95 model, which can carry nuclear weapons, was not specified, nor were the countries that used their aircraft for surveillance.
“The Tu-95MS (…) strategic bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out a planned flight in the airspace over the international waters of the Barents Sea and the Norwegian Sea, north of Scandinavia and northwest Russia,” the ministry said, stating that the operation lasted more than seven hours.
“In some cases the strategic bombers were accompanied by combat aircraft from abroad,” he added.
The ministry specified that these types of flights are carried out regularly in many regions of the world and in accordance with international law.
However, in mid-December, South Korea and Japan criticized the flight of Russian and Chinese military aircraft near their territory, prompting them to urgently deploy fighter jets.
According to Tokyo, these patrols involved two Tu-95s flying over the Sea of Japan to rendezvous with two Chinese H-6 bombers in the East China Sea.
